  • EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based treatment primarily used to treat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR has shown efficacy in treating anxiety disorders, and phobias and can be used with children adolescents, and adults.

EMDR sessions involve asking the client to recall a distressing event while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements or tapping.

The theory behind EMDR is that traumatic memories are stored in a way that prevents normal processing, causing ongoing psychological distress. In other words, “the past becomes the present”. By stimulating both sides of the brain while focusing on a memory EMDR allows the client to reprocess the memory so it can be integrated into the client’s life in a less distressing way.
